The Utrecht armchair was designed by Dutch architect and designer Gerrit Thomas Rietveld in 1935 for the Metz & Co. department store in Amsterdam. This example is a contemporary production by Cassina from its I Maestri collection.
The design is immediately recognizable for its graphic construction and distinctive rhythm of lines and angles. Rietveld treated the individual elements of the chair almost as separate units, creating a sculptural composition that remains visually striking from every angle.
Unlike some of Rietveld's earlier, more rigid furniture designs, the Utrecht was conceived with comfort in mind. Its tubular steel structure incorporates elastic webbing beneath the seat and back, while polyurethane foam and polyester batting provide the cushioning. The gray textile upholstery gives the otherwise strongly defined form a softer appearance.
A leading figure of the De Stijl movement, Rietveld is best known for works including the Red and Blue Chair, Zig Zag Chair, and the Rietveld Schröder House. The Utrecht represents another side of his work, combining his geometric approach with a more generous and comfortable form.
Cassina acquired exclusive production rights to the Utrecht in 1988, and the chair has since formed part of the Cassina I Maestri collection.
