Charles & Ray Eames Eames Plastic Armchairs DAW for Vitra, Set of 10

A set of 10 Eames Plastic Armchairs in the DAW configuration, designed by Charles and Ray Eames and produced by Vitra. The original design dates to 1950, while this set represents contemporary Vitra production in polypropylene.

The DAW — Dining Armchair Wood — combines the molded Eames shell with a light hardwood base. These chairs feature gray upholstered polypropylene shells, stained and varnished maple legs, and black lacquered steel cross-struts.

The Eames Plastic Armchair was first presented in 1948 as part of the Museum of Modern Art's “Low-Cost Furniture Design” competition and entered production in 1950. Its molded shell was designed to follow the contours of the human body, while the ability to combine the shell with different bases created a versatile new furniture typology.

Vitra has produced Eames furniture since 1957. In 1993, the original fiberglass shell of the Plastic Armchair was replaced with recyclable polypropylene, which remains part of the contemporary production.

The DAW configuration gives the chairs a warmer, more residential character through its wooden legs, while retaining the clean and functional quality of the original Eames design.

Condition:
Good pre-owned condition with normal signs of wear consistent with age and use. The upholstery and frames show expected signs of previous use. Each chair retains its Vitra manufacturer's label marked “VITRA 515.” Structurally sound and ready for use.
