The Swan sofa, Model 3321, was designed by Danish architect and designer Arne Jacobsen in 1958 as part of his complete interior design for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. This example is from contemporary production by Fritz Hansen.
With its soft, sculptural form and distinctive curved silhouette, the Swan has become one of Jacobsen's most recognizable furniture designs. The organic shape contains no straight lines, creating a sense of softness and movement while maintaining the simplicity that characterizes much of Jacobsen's work.
The sofa is upholstered in black leather and supported by a matt brushed aluminum base. Its shell is made from polyurethane with glass fibre reinforcement and covered with cold-cured foam and leather.
The Swan was originally created for the SAS Royal Hotel, which opened in 1960, and was part of Jacobsen's unusually comprehensive approach to design. He was responsible not only for the building but also for its furniture and interior details, creating a unified environment down to the smallest elements.
The Swan sofa was reintroduced to the Fritz Hansen collection in 2000 and continues to be produced today.
