Arne Jacobsen Oksen Armchair with Footstool for Fritz Hansen, Denmark

The Oksen armchair was designed by Danish architect and designer Arne Jacobsen and launched by Fritz Hansen in 1966. This original vintage example is accompanied by its matching footstool and retains its original Fritz Hansen label.

The Oksen stands apart from Jacobsen's more organic designs of the 1950s, such as the Egg and Swan. With its imposing proportions, angular lines, and sculptural form, it represents a more powerful and distinctly international direction in his work.

Jacobsen developed the Oksen over several years before its launch. The design was influenced in part by American lounge chairs he encountered during a trip to the United States, while its strong, structured lines have also been noted for their Japanese influence.

The armchair is upholstered in black leather with a generously padded seat designed for comfort. It rests on a five-star swivel base in black powder-coated aluminum with a satin-polished steel column. The accompanying footstool has a matching four-star base.

The Oksen was produced only briefly during the 1960s before being discontinued. Fritz Hansen later reintroduced the design in 2017, making original examples from the first production period particularly interesting for collectors of Jacobsen's work.
