Charles & Ray Eames Eames Lounge Chair & Ottoman for Herman Miller

The Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman, Models 670 and 671, were designed by Charles and Ray Eames in 1956. This set features molded plywood shells with walnut veneer, black leather upholstery, and the characteristic five-star swivel base. A Herman Miller metal sign is present beneath the chair.

The Lounge Chair was the Eameses' first design created specifically for a high-end market. Unlike their earlier work focused on mass-produced furniture, the Lounge Chair combined molded plywood, leather, and generous cushioning to create a more refined and luxurious form.

The chair consists of curved plywood shells covered with walnut veneer and fitted with separate leather cushions, headrest, and armrests. The black leather cushions feature the distinctive button-stitching associated with the design. The five-star base allows the chair to swivel and recline naturally, while the matching ottoman completes the original composition.

First introduced in 1956, the Lounge Chair quickly became one of the most recognizable designs of the Eameses and an enduring example of twentieth-century American furniture design.

Condition:
The set shows visible signs of age and use consistent with an older example. The leather has traces of use, including cracks beneath the seat cushion near the zipper. The walnut veneer has defects on the headrest and ottoman, including cracks to the ottoman veneer. These condition details are reflected in the overall presentation of the piece. Structurally sound and ready for use.
